    The 1988 British Professional Championship

Things seem a little quite upon the forum at present so I have been leafing through a few old darts magazines and stumbled across this - the last BDO British Professional Championship, played in 1988.

25 years on it is fascinating to note that some of those involved are still playing competitive darts at the highest level, including first round loser Phil Taylor.

There are loads of quirky characters involved in the field, some famous, some forgotten in the mists of time. I well remember Dave Lee and his terrific tattoo and Richie Gardner - a big man with the tiniest of darts. But who were Ray Battye, Richard Smith and Wes Topley and John Goves, the 3-0 conquerors of Bristow and Lowe respectively?

For some of them, this one competition may just have been the pinnacle of their careers. This may be the only time they get mentioned again, so as I say, whilst things are quiet....................

Just checked Ray Battye out, seems he's from holmfirth and still playing, had some good form around the late 80's.
